A few of my favourite neutral paint colours

Helloooo out there .......

Today I thought I would chat briefly about something that is dear to our hearts ..... namely paint colours !!!

If you have been tuning into Natural Calico, you will probably have sussed out that we're all about creating a blank canvas with neutral tones and creating 'interest and personality' with gorgeous accessories.

In theory, this approach should make choosing wall colours much easier ...... hmmmm - yes, up to a point ..... but it can be tricky enough getting neutrals right. Some neutrals have a lot of pink or green or yellow in them - and then of course, a huge factor is the natural light in your own home - not to mention the impact of things like flooring ........ the same off white paint in a room with white painted floor boards is going to look entirely different in a room with say, stripped reclaimed floor boards !!

Anyway - the best advice I can give is to try out tester pots and keep looking at the room at different times of the day depending on sunshine etc.

Here goes .....

I've had a load of emails about the colours I used in my own kitchen ....

The ceiling and walls are good old fashioned 'Pure White' !!

The cupboards and cooker hood are hand painted in Farrow and Ball 'Cornforth White'

The colour used for the Larder and stools is discontinued but F&B 'Downpipe' is a good alternative .....

I adore open shelves and made a point of designing a big run of them in our present home - it is soooo much easier to simply reach for something rather than rummaging on your hands and knees in the back of cupboards ...

Once again I used standard 'Pure White' for these shelves !!

Elsewhere, I used a "new discovery" in several parts of our present home ......

The pale grey above the white panelling is Fired Earth "Bone White" .....

If you are looking for a pale grey that is quite soft, this is a really great colour I think !!

And here is another great neutral that I use loads ......

This one is Crown's  "A whisper of antique cream" ......

if you are looking for an off white which has virtually no pink, yellow or cream, this really is an excellent choice I think!!

And the really nice thing is that you can use the same colour up over the ceiling and woodwork too ..... painters sometimes think this is an odd thing to do and that features wont 'stand out' if there is no contrast  - but I actually think it works really well and creates a seamless look !!

Depending on the room, I do sometimes introduce a little more depth .... for example, this is a home we rented for a year while renovating another home .......

I used F&B 'Shaded White' here ...... it's one of my fave F&B colours .... I love how you can take it down either the grey and brown route !!

I used it again for the kitchen cupboards in this house ....

Hopefully that gives you a few ideas to play around with ...... at some stage, I'll chat about painting furniture.

Meanwhile I'm feeling rather excited about two new suppliers which we will be introducing to our shop ....... one is a top class Scandi outfit whose products I've bought and admired for years ..... it will probably be a couple of months before we start stocking their product but I have a hunch you will love their goodies as much as I do :) The second supplier - an Irish Company -  will be coming on stream a little sooner - again, beautiful quality products - watch this space !!

Have a lovely weekend .... and wrap up well !!

Take Care
